Mike Rowbottom: The golden years of Haringey AC are officially celebrated

Thursday, October 03, 2013

Through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, British athletics benefited from a rich seam of athletic talent located at Haringey Athletic Club. During that time a glut of competitors whose careers were shaped and nurtured on and around the track at the New River Stadium, just a few corner kicks along White Hart Lane from Tottenham Hotspur FC, earned national and international success, and that enduring achievement is to be officially celebrated.

This month, The London Coaching Foundation is presenting The Haringey Golden Years - an oral and visual exhibition involving 22 of the club's most distinguished athletes and coaches. Contributors include Sebastian Coe, who was both a member and President of the club, Mike McFarlane, a key figure as both athlete and then coach, and the late Jean Pickering MBE, Olympic athlete and wife of Ron Pickering, former Haringey President.

Urban Sessions at Cre8

Monday, July 22, 2013

BEER TODAY, TOMORROW & THE DAY AFTER THAT

So here we all are baking to a dry crisp in the heat of the summer – so what better way to cool off than in a building full of beer.

Yes, the Old Baths is playing host to Urban Sessions, a fine liquid festival of delicious artisan beers, ciders, cocktails, bands, DJs, food trucks. And 10, yes, you heard, 10 bars.

The impressive indoor space is only surpassed by our immense new outdoor community garden complete with giant gazebo to keep those crafty beers cool.

We can’t begin to imagine why you’d what to be all holed up with the crowds over in Stratford and that new Olympic Park thingy when you can find respite with your buddies over here - and fill your tankards with foaming ale from quarters of the world you may never actually get to visit.

No rush. It’s on until Halloween.  Plenty of time for a Salty Kiss.

Here’s a little taster that Cre8 Media has cut together to wet your lips…….

#Cre8thefuture – the inaugural youth diversity sessions

It was a busy news day what with all the revelations regarding the Stephen Lawrence murder case by a former Met Officer who went public on how he’d been briefed to dig the dirt on the Lawrence family all those years ago.

Which meant some of the promised panellists for our inaugural Youth Diversity Sessions never actually made it to the door - or the event even. But the show must go on, as they say.

We had some technical issues too, but the audience and the guest speakers more than made up for the challenges.

In the Chair was Superintendent Leroy Logan, about to retire from the Met, a founder member of the Black Police Association and hot off a plane from Jamaica.

Joining him on stage for the Cre8 debate was the writer and social rights campaigner Kevin Maxwell; young Hackney actor Hammed Animashaun (currently appearing at The Lyric, Hammersmith) and our very own Chief, the four times Olympian John Herbert.

Ooh, and arriving late, spending 20 minutes of valuable debating time promoting his own shows and then leaving again before any of us had had a chance to challenge him, Paul Blake, a film-maker who runs Maroon Productions. Hmm. Thanks for your input, Paul.

So what were the memorable moments, and where will it all lead, I hear you say?

In no particular order:

“Cre8 is a powerhouse for change” – well we certainly admire your chutzpah young man and it’s certainly where we are heading.

“The Met Police needs a change of heart, not a change of face,” – Kevin Maxwell supporting a system of meritocracy over positive discrimination.

But it’s the culture in the Police force that’s all wrong, because Kevin was a detective for 11 years and it was discrimination that made him leave.

“The Met Police’s default position is not to appreciate difference.” Boom.

Cue employment tribunals – and Kevin is showing a winning hand.

And a compelling note on which to end on – “Discrimination is real. Racism ruins lives.”

So what next? Well, East London Radio will broadcast some podcasts shortly, so you can hear the debate for yourself and we will no doubt be producing a little video of it anytime now.

Until then, if you’d like to join the Cre8 Youth Board and start to Cre8 real and positive change, email susann@cre8lifestyle.org.uk

Exclusive Wonderland Sessions - filmed by Threads TV at Cre8.

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

The ‘mister’s in his name for a reason. Sharp and nimble beyond his 19 years, Mr Wize has collaborated with everyone from artist Matthew Stone, Cassette Playa and Mykki Blanco (you can spot him in the latter’s Haze.Boogie.Life video). But as this exclusive live session goes, he’s pretty good at selling his music too – as you’ll soon hear, his debut track ‘X’ is a joy.

ART and JAZZ

Friday, December 07, 2012

Wow, what an evening we had. Great art from outer-space, but the bike really took the biscuit. Being a bike freak myself it was incredible, not just a show piece, you could actually ride it; and the pig on a spit out in the garden roasting. It was like some medieval banquette with jesters, sword displays and a good old punch up at the end. Well no, not exactly, we just did a lot dancing and lots of drinking.

Pavilion Cafe sponsor Tokio exhibition

Friday, November 02, 2012

The Tokio exhibition was well received.

Unfortunately the man himself was in Japan working on his new material but we were blessed with a video and a bespoke painting made especially for Cre8 by the artist himself.

The painting contains some of the most iconic figures in British music including Jazzy B, Gabriel and Freddy Mercury.

Many thanks also to Rob, owner of the Pavilion fine café in Victoria Park. Your hors d’oeuvres, canapés wine and organic apple juice were delectable.

Many thanks also to our Korean brethren for supplying such great atmospheric music to compliment the art…
